Stinson Aircraft was founded by pioneer aviator Edward "Eddie" Stinson. After learning to fly with the Wright Brothers in 1911 and working as a flight instructor and barnstormer, Stinson relocated to Detroit, Michigan, in the mid-1920s. With the financial backing of local business leaders, he formed the Stinson Aircraft Syndicate in 1925, incorporating as the Stinson Aircraft Corporation in 1926.
